What can teachers teach guidance (Secondary to Primary)

It is a requirement by law to employ only GTC Scotland registered teachers as teachers in Scottish schools and further, that employment should be in accordance with the teacher's GTC Scotland registration category. The integrity of the Register and the application of it in this way is fundamental to assuring the public and users of the education system that only those with the requisite qualifications are allowed to teach.

Registered teachers in secondary education are qualified to teach their subject and ‘responsibility of all’ subjects (literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing) in S1 to S6 age groups. Registered secondary teachers may also be in a position to teach their subject with younger learners.

Once an employer has confirmed that a teacher’s registration category aligns to a role, it is for the employer to decide if the teacher has the appropriate professional skills and knowledge to undertake the teaching duties allocated to that role.
