Inclusive Pedagogy - M.Ed. Inclusive Practice programme
About the programme
The Inclusive Pedagogy course is designed for educators, parents, and educational leaders across a variety of both domestic and international contexts. Taught by a staff with international experiences and global insights, this course endows the local Scottish contexts with informed perspectives of inclusion and inclusive approaches to education.
Inclusive pedagogy is a distinctive concept which looks for alternative ways to organise teaching and learning by rejecting the deterministic views of ability which dominate much of current educational practice. It identifies three key, interrelated themes: Understanding Learning, Social Justice and Being an Active Professional, each of which is informed by key pedagogic principles, which in combination provide a novel framework for thinking about inclusive practice.
Fundamental to the Inclusive Practice programme (in which this is the central course) is the belief that all learners have the same rights and are of equal worth, irrespective of any protected characterises, their current level of attainment, cultural background, race, gender or age. All learners have the right to be educated alongside their peers, and young people's needs are best met through systems of shared responsibility.
This course aims to help practitioners review and enhance the learning experience of all children and young people, including those with additional support needs. It gives experienced practitioners the time, opportunity and support to examine existing practice in the light of new research-informed knowledge and insights.
It also aims to enable practitioners to build upon the range of experiences and different perspectives found amongst groups of colleagues supporting pupils with additional support needs, in a variety of contexts and settings, by exposing these to sustained discussion and critical appraisal. A central feature of the course is the use of collaborative enquiry as a tool for creating new knowledge and transforming practice, by synthesising literature, personal and professional reflection and practice.
