I am looking for information on the registration of Urdu teachers in Scotland. I notice on the website that there has been an increase in heritage language teachers but not sure how that might be broken up. Are you able to clarify the number of GTCS teachers teaching Urdu and if that number is increasing, decreasing or steady?
Response
I refer to your request for information dated 28 January 2025 (FOI 24-25/88) in which you asked for “the number of GTCS teachers teaching Urdu” and "if that number is increasing, decreasing or steady” which we have handled under the Freedom of Information(Scotland) Act.
By way of advice and assistance, please note that GTC Scotland operates a professional Register and not an employment based one. This means that all individuals who meet our registration requirements can be registered with us without being actively employed as a teacher or living in Scotland.
As data extracted on 28 January 2025, the number of individuals holding the Community Languages – Urdu registration category was 9. Please note that the Register operates as a current register and as such we cannot provide historical figures unless otherwise recorded. I have therefore applied section 17(1)(b)of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act (FOISA) to those queries within your request for information not held.
We have recorded the number of individuals holding the Community Languages– Urdu registration category since March 2021 and I have provided this information in Table 1 below.
Table 1: The number of individuals holding the Community Languages – Urdu registration category since March 2021
