Ethics and the Teaching Profession: Why what we value, think and do really matters, will be presented by Dr Shirley Van Nuland.
As we begin a process to review the Code of Professionalism and Conduct, the journey starts not with the document itself but in a conversation about ethics.
Teaching is not only a technical role. It is complex relational and intellectual work. It requires hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute, effective ethical reasoning.
In the Annual Lecture 2022, Dr Shirley Van Nuland will discuss how ethics are intertwined with teaching and the crucial role that teaching professionals have in the leadership of change.
During the Lecture, Shirley will invite us to consider why what we value, think, and do really matters.

Dr Shirley Van Nuland
While at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Dr Van Nuland taught Education Law, Policy, and Ethics and Foundations of Education at the undergraduate level and Education Law and Governance at the graduate level. Her research interests include standards of practice, ethical standards, and codes of conduct as these intersect in the lives of teachers and students. Currently she is researching the new teacher education program in Ontario and new teacher induction and mentorship programs in Canada.
She began her teaching career as an elementary school teacher and later as an administrator and computer education teacher followed by a principalship at the secondary school level. With this extensive experience Shirley joined the Ministry of Education in Ontario as an Education Officer. At the tertiary level, she has served as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education, Academic Lead of the Bachelor of Education Program and currently as an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech University. She has worked as the Chair of the UOIT Research Ethics Board with two prior terms as an REB member, as an Elected Governor on UOIT’s Board of Governors, and numerous other service aspects within her universities, school boards, and other organizations including the International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET).
She holds a PhD in Theory and Policy Studies from the University of Toronto, a Master of Education in Curriculum and Design from the University of Windsor and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Western Ontario (Brescia University College). Her work has been recognized through Nipissing University’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2005), the Service Award from the Canadian Association for Foundations of Education (CAFE) (2013), the Publication Award for the Online Learning Tool (2014) from CAFE and the Dr. Darrell Bloom Award from ICET (2019).
