Sponsoring approaches for career progression among black and minority ethnic teachers explored in new video
In 2024, GTC Scotland published a report on increasing diversity in teaching by using a sponsoring approach to enhance career progression among black and minority ethnic (BME) teachers: Sponsoring for diversity in teacher progression.
The report was funded by the Scottish Government's Anti-Racism in Education Programme as part of their central aim to identify measures which will address race inequality which remains evident in schools.
In a new video, Asif Chishti, Teaching Standards Education Officer, GTC Scotland, provides an overview of the report which will be of particular use to employers of teachers, education and equality groups, and BME teachers who are interested in Sponsoring.
Sponsoring is a relatively new concept for Scottish education, It describes a particular relationship between a BME teacher (the Sponsored Individual) and a more senior colleague (the Sponsor). It is a strategy aimed at improving progression rates among BME teachers.
The video covers:
- Sponsoring and why it has been recommended
- The key attributes of a Sponsor
- The building blocks of Sponsoring
- How teacher employers can use the report in their context.
