The Scottish Universities Inclusion Group and GTC Scotland have published the third edition of the National Framework for Inclusion (NFI).

The NFI is designed to support teachers at all stages in their careers to recognise, value, and respond positively to the diversity of children and young people in schools.

The NFI consists of a series of reflective questions linked to the Professional Standards for Scotland’s Teachers. The new edition has been updated to bring the NFI in line with the Professional Standards for Teachers 2021.

Teachers can use the Framework’s questions to reflect on the inclusivity of their teaching and learning. Together, the Professional Standards and NFI provide a structure for teachers to reflect on social justice and inclusion.

The NFI was developed by the Scottish Universities Inclusion Group and is hosted on GTC Scotland’s website.

Di Cantali, Chair of Scottish Universities Inclusion Group, said:

The Framework aims to support teachers to become or develop as an inclusive educator, encouraging them to think about how they are meeting the needs of our learners.
Although it is intended to help student teachers, it is also for registered teachers and experienced teachers in their career-long professional learning, encouraging reflection and professional learning relating to inclusion at all stages of a teacher’s career.

Dr Pauline Stephen, Chief Executive and Registrar, GTC Scotland:

Almost one in three learners are reported to have additional support needs. The NFI is a vital tool to support teachers with their learning and will contribute to improving inclusive practice.
Social justice is one of the professional values at the core of the Professional Standards for Teachers.  The strong focus on professional values in the Professional Standards helps teachers develop their professional identity and underpins a deep commitment to all learners’ cognitive, social and emotional growth and wellbeing.
