Apply for registration

GTC Scotland manages the Register of Teachers which contains details of every teacher and college lecturer qualified to teach in Scotland. Search the Register can be used by members of the public to check a teacher or college lecturers’ registration status and by employers as proof of registration.

It is a legal requirement for people employed as teachers in Scottish schools to be registered with GTC Scotland.

In 2018, there was a national agreement that all lecturers working in Scotland’s colleges would register with GTC Scotland.

Individuals on the Register can only teach in accordance with their registration category.

There are four main registration categories:

  • Primary
  • Secondary (Subject)
  • Further Education
  • Additional Support Needs

When teachers who qualified outside Scotland apply for registration and meet the registration requirements, we will award them either Full Registration or Provisional Registration. Teachers who hold Full Registration in Primary or Secondary (Subject) can add additional subjects/sectors to their registration. Teacher who hold registration in Primary or Secondary education and who have completed an appropriate Additional Support Needs (ASN) award can apply to register in ASN.

When college lecturers who qualified outside Scotland apply for registration we can award either Full Registration or Provisional (Conditional) Registration. Teachers who hold GTC registration in another category who want to register in Further Education, can contact us at gtcs@gtcs.org.uk with the subject line ‘College Lecturer registration’, including in the email their GTC Scotland registration number, name and date of birth.
